Equals National and Regional In-person Events
Equals National Conference – 28th June 2024 – Central London
Squaring the Circle
Achieving Good and Outstanding judgements with the successful
delivery of Different (non-National Curriculum) Curricula for
children and young people with Profound, Complex
and Severe Learning Disabilities.
Date: Friday 28th June 2024
Venue: Friends House, 173-177 Euston Road, Central London, NW1 2BJ.
An increasing number of specialist schools are recognising the need for non-traditional curriculum models (such as the Equals Multi-tiered Curriculum) as an alternative to a differentiated National Curriculum to effectively meet their pupil’s needs. Clearly however, not teaching TRADITIONAL National Curriculum subjects, naturally creates a concern for schools and how this might be viewed by Ofsted.
Starting with a reminder of Ofsted’s current Inspection Framework, and how this relates to SEND, delivered by an Ofsted HMI, the day will continue with a succession of interactive talks from leaders of Outstanding Equals Exemplar Schools, on the key issues identified by them in attaining both Outstanding and Good Ofsted judgements over the last 18 months.
These key issues have been identified as:
- Preparation
- The deep dive into Reading
- Other deep dives – negotiable or not?
- Successfully demonstrating high ambition for all learners at all stages of development, but especially the most academically able
- Base-lining all learners
- Adopting an analytic approach to teaching and learning
- Successfully demonstrating impact
Speakers will include:
- A senior Ofsted HMI to discuss the Inspection Framework and specifically look at deep dives.

A Different View of Curriculum & Assessment for children
with global learning disabilities (with or without autism) in mainstream schools
For a variety of reasons, mainstream schools across the UK are being increasingly required to enrol pupils with severe learning disabilities who are working at cognitive levels considerably below their neuro- typical, conventionally developing peers. The depth, multiplicity, complexity and permanence of the learning difficulties being experienced by these children, makes a conventional mainstream education (in the same class, working on the same curriculum) extraordinarily problematic, irrespective of the level of one-to-one TA support.
There are no easy solutions, but there are solutions.
Equals, a UK based not-for-profit charity working in the interests of those with severe and profound learning disabilities, has spent over four years writing a multi-tiered series of curriculums that are different (rather than differentiated) from the National Curriculum. These are the first of their kind in the world and recognise that those with global that is, all encompassing, learning disabilities, learn differently to neuro-typical children. It logically follows that such children need to be taught differently and taught different things.
The day is an explanation of what this means for schools, school leaders, teachers, TAs, parents and other stakeholders.
The day will be spent looking at:
- what the research tells us
- the pedagogical logic recognising ‘difference’ which in turn, drives change
- what it looks like in practice
- what Ofsted says
- the benefits, the challenges and the options.
Development Days
In-Person – An opportunity to visit an Exemplar School
This is an opportunity to visit an Exemplar School and spend time with senior leaders and in classrooms. The purpose of this day is to increase the understanding of a Informal and/or Semi-formal Curricula as well as being able to ask about assessment, planning or any other aspect of teaching and learning that you are interested in.
The Exemplar Schools involve specialist schools, where either Equals has provided additional consultancy over the past 2-3 years or where they are demonstrating best practice. They have been observed implementing Curriculum Schemes of Work well in their own school. These schools have provided presentations to Equals Members’, via Regional Curriculum Conferences over the past 36 months.
They are able to articulate how their curriculum:
- can be implemented
- how it works with other processes such as Mapping and Assessing Personal Progress
- And to demonstrate the impact.
Costs from £89 which goes towards expenses such as lunch/refreshments etc.
Further development days are being organised for Spring 2024 for the following schools.
- Brackenfield School in Nottingham on the 25th June 2024
- Dee Banks School in Cheshire – 22nd May and the 2nd July 2024
