Attachment disorders may well affect a very high percentage of those with PMLD and SLD, and a basic understanding of John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth’s theories are probably essential for effective teaching of these learners. Attachment theory is overwhelmingly concerned with relationships between children and caregivers, why these go wrong and what we might do to repair such breakdowns. The most important tenet is that all young children need to develop a relationship with at least one primary caregiver for normal social and emotional development to flourish.
