Teaching Communication – Narratives (part 2)

with Peter Imray

Narratives are the telling by learners of both factual and/or fictional stories. These are not scripted (as in a book) but are mostly spoken and derived from memory and repetitive practice. They are usually quite short – a minute or two in the telling – and describe events or relate interests, biographical information, jokes, stories etc.. Narratives are the way we all communicate about our lives – good, bad, funny, sad – to those who matter to us. They are the essential glue of social humanity. Narratives are however, extremely challenging for all but the most able of SLD
learners because they require skills of memory, organisation, structure, emphasis and communication which are acquired naturally by neurotypical conventionally developing learners well before the age of 6.

Because they are not specifically taught (rather like Play skills) there is no schema available. This training seeks to explain the basic problems and provide detailed solutions.

Online CPD Sessions

“Love these courses, it is like having a university lecture/tutorial”

“I love listening to the evidence based information”

“All the information was presented simply and efficiently. It was interesting and the time passed very quickly. An excellent training session”

Rodney House School – Manchester

We feel the online training delivered by EQUALS have been WONDERFUL.  The relevance and depth of the sessions has been fantastic, Peter is a very knowledgeable man. Having training delivered online has enabled all our teachers to attend and have discussions after the event rather than one teacher attending and disseminating which can water down the content.
Thank you so much and keep them coming!
