SUMMARY:Informal Curriculum (CLD) with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:For pupils and students with complex learning difficulties (CLD) who are working consistently and over time to the early reaches of the severe learning difficulties spectrum. \nRecognises that there are those at the very complex end of the SLD spectrum who are still ‘learning to be’ rather than ‘learning to do’. Such learners are very likely to have an autism diagnosis\, have fixed and limited areas of interest and be behavioural communicators\, that is\, they will not readily use language as their main means of communication. The depth and complexity of their learning difficulties calls for a separate\, though related\, curriculum model that is the Informal Curriculum. \nThe Equals Informal Curriculum is set in the context of Equals multi-tiered curriculum approach\, recognising that differentiation from England’s (or indeed any) National Curriculum is NOT sufficient to meet the needs of pupils and students with profound\, complex\, severe or global learning difficulties. \nFor these populations\, who are all working consistently and over time below or very near the start of their national curriculum\, curricula NEED TO be different rather than differentiated\, because the way such pupils learn is different\, and often very\, very different from neuro-typical\, conventional developing learners for whom the national curriculum was designed. \n

SUMMARY:My Autistic Outing\, Sharing the Spectrum (part 1) with Dr Jo Grace
DESCRIPTION:Dr Jo Grace is a regular contributor to Equals’ training offer\, a specialist in sensory engagement whose work at The Sensory Projects focuses on the life experiences of people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. Many of us also know Jo to be an autistic woman\, something she did not used to reveal in the professional realm. In this series of two sessions Dr Jo will take us on a journey that begins with her ‘outing’ as an autistic person in the professional sphere and ends with her recent contributions to the increasingly tense debate around the autistic spectrum. \nThrough exploring Jo’s deeply personal story\, and the stories of other autistic people who have very high support needs\, we will gain insight into the social and communication differences autistic people experience\, we will touch on sensory differences and develop our understanding of where we can look for reliable advice when seeking to support autistic people with very high support needs\, as well as those who face less barriers to access in life. \nKieran Rose The Autistic Advocate recently described Jo’s work as both subtle and radical saying that “Joanna exists as someone who notices. She notices how people move through the world\, how they adapt\, where they are strained\, and where they are sustained. She resists the temptation to explain people away\, or to translate their lives into lessons and instead\, as is evident in this work\, she trusts you to meet her stories with curiosity and care.” \nThese sessions will be ideal for those who are curious and those who care about autistic people across the spectrum. \nThis is a two-part session – the 2nd part will run on Wednesday 25th November 2026

SUMMARY:Development Day - Sunningdale School in Sunderland
DESCRIPTION:“Leaders have developed an inspirational curriculum that ensures that learning is tailored to meet the needs of all pupils.” – Ofsted (June 2023)\nSunningdale School \nSunningdale School has developed a multi-tiered curriculum approach for pupils with severe\, complex\, profound and multiple learning difficulties. The school’s approach has been designed so that pupils at all levels can effectively apply their learning to develop independence and agency \nSunningdale School’s vision is encapsulated in the phrase\, ‘Be More…’ This will be different for every child. Believing that every child can Be More means that we want every child to be more in whatever way is important to them. The school’s vision is actioned at a pupil level through the use of a highly personalised planning system supported by specific Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs) and an understanding of Engagement motivators. \nClasses are arranged across 3 theoretical pedagogical pathways that begin on transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage and run through Key Stages 1 and 2 until the pupils’ transition to relevant secondary provisions at the end of year 6. The pathways are the Initiate Pathway\, the Explore Pathway and the Functional Pathway. These are underpinned by a pre-formal\, informal low-demand and semi-formal approach respectively. The school utilises a play-based pedagogy throughout. \nThe school’s pathways are supported by a multi-tiered curriculum model that is sequenced to towards cumulatively developing skills\, knowledge and holistic development both within and across each pathway. Curriculum areas are closely matched to consider the developmental needs of the pupils in each pathway. The school developed its pathway approach based on the unique needs and growing complexity of the pupil groups attending the school. They are supported by a play based pedagogy as well as specific well known interventions and strategies. Strong links are made with Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) outcomes and subjects build cumulatively towards supporting these: Employment\, Independent Living\, Community Participation\, Friendships & Relationships. \nSunningdale School – Curriculum Overview \nSunningdale School are are establishing a series of practice sharing days where delegates will get to hear from senior and middle leaders about the school’s approach including how subjects\, pedagogy and assessment are structured to support individualised outcomes for pupils working throughout the school. Delegates will have time to speak to senior and middle leaders as well as spend time in classrooms and see the schools facilities. \nPlaces will be limited to ensure that delegates take as much from the day as possible but will also offer some opportunities to network with like minded provisions. \nThe cost is set at £100 per person. The day will include a buffet lunch and networking session. \nPlease get in touch with Sunningdale School if you would like support with accommodation or travel recommendations. \nThe day will begin at 9am with teas & coffees and close will be at 3.30pm. \nPlease visit Senhub – Sunningdale School to learn more or to book a place.  \n

SUMMARY:My Play for Learners Working Within Equals Pre-Formal (PMLD) Curriculum Pathway with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:In placing Play at the heart of the 2nd edition of Equals Pre-Formal Curriculum\, we are recognising the central importance of Play in every human society no matter where that society is. Free Play\, entered into freely and freely maintained over time\, enables all learners to engage\, irrespective of any difficulties and disabilities that they may experience\, as long as we\, the people supporting learners to find their place in the world\, \n(i) understand the difficulties and disabilities associated with PMLD \n(ii) understand the very early developmental levels those with PMLD are working at\, irrespective of their chronological age and \n(iii) understand each individual learner as well as that learner’s own parents do. \nTeaching Play for those with PMLD is however\, different to teaching Play in the other Equals pathways. Here\, we not only have to consider teaching in the moment\, but also the crucial consideration of choice\, and how learners with PMLD are likely to express free choice. Once we enable this\, we can build our Curriculum around each individual learner’s response to Free Play as being the most likely area where we might discover real engagement. Only when we ensure real engagement can we expect real learning to take place.

SUMMARY:Defining Learning & Cohort Characteristics with James Waller
DESCRIPTION:In this online workshop we will explore the specific characteristics school and curriculum leaders could take into account in order to understand the specific profiles of their learners with complex SEND\, beyond the usual ‘labels’ of PMLD\, SLD and MLD. We will consider which characteristics of learning (including developmental assessment) might be valuable in defining provision to meet those needs at either an individual level or in defining specific curriculum pathways (for larger SEN bases and special schools). This will support schools in understanding where pupils might be described withing the governments proposed Specialist Support Packages as well as defining the accurate use of alternative or hybrid curriculum models (including the use of Equals Pre-Formal\, Informal\, Semi-Formal frameworks). In the session there will be exemplification of how a school might want to approach decision regarding the design of provision to meet ever more complex presentations of need within schools and classrooms. This session is ideal for those starting to think about establishing a specialist base or restructuring their specialist pathways. \n  \nThis session helps to pull together strategies around sensory processing\, communication\, play based learning\, engagement and assessment so that they can be considered within the context of specialist provision packages and pathways. For those interested in depth or details regarding the exemplification of strategies and characteristics referred to in the session\, practice sharing visits can be booked here: Senhub – Sunningdale School

SUMMARY:"The Hidden Spring" with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:The Hidden Spring explores the ground-breaking work of neuro-biologist Mark Solms as it applies to all those of all ages with PMLD\, CLD and SLD. Neurobiology is the branch of biology studying the structure\, development\, function\, and pathology of the nervous system\, focusing on how neurons\, glia\, and circuits form the brain and regulate behaviour.  Solms’ unique take is to marry the science of the brain with his knowledge of psychiatry and psychoanalysis to explore what he regards as seven central ‘biological drives’ that all human beings naturally and constantly\, seek to balance. These seven biological drives\, LUST\, SEEKING\, RAGE\, FEAR\, PANIC/GRIEF\, CARE and PLAY are common to all humans and explain much of the psychological problems that affect us when balance is not (or in the case of those with learning disabilities) cannot be achieved. \nAffective needs produce affective sensations\, \n‘Affects are how we become aware of our drives; they tell us how well or badly things are going in relation to the specific needs they measure. This is what affects are for: they convey which biological things are going well or badly for us\, they arouse us to do something about them.’ (Solms\, 2021\, p98\, original emphasis). \nThe webinar explores how the seven drives affect behaviour\, especially when those with learning disabilities are not enabled (or more commonly\, not allowed) to seek their own balance.

SUMMARY:Teaching My Thinking & Problem Solving with Peter Imray
DESCRIPTION:Teaching My Thinking & Problem Solving is a classic example of the ‘different not differentiation’ approach which permeates the Equals Semi-Formal Curriculum. For those with SLD\, Thinking & Problem Solving cannot be abstracted but must relate to everyday experiences\, which can only be generalised once individual solutions have been learned. This then is no longer a small part of Mathematics\, but becomes one of the four core subjects of the Equals Semi-Formal Curriculum
